Solar Gate has been awarded the Materialpreis 2023 in the category Heartfelt projects.
The jury noted: “It is sensational that an entire façade can regulate itself independently thanks to a unique property of a material, and at the same time manage completely without operating energy. 4D printing and biomimetics make it possible to replace the spurned shading slats with a smart and poetic alternative and to regulate the indoor climate with an adaptive shading system. As is so often the case, researchers at the University of Stuttgart are demonstrating ways in which the inexhaustible potential of nature can be integrated into our design processes. Mimicry and bionics at its best.”
Congratulations to the project team (ICD) Prof. Achim Menges, Dylan Wood, Tiffany Cheng, Ekin Sila Sahin, Yasaman Tahouni, our project partners Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC), University of Stuttgart and Cluster of Excellence LivMatS - Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems, Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat Freiburg, IKT Institute of Polymer Technology, all the student assistants, and our project supporter DFG German Research Foundation.
