MULTIPLE OPEN POSITIONS IN THE NEW CLUSTER OF EXCELLENCE Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture

The University of Stuttgart will establish its new Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC)” in 2019. With an initial funding period of seven years, a Cluster of Excellence is the most significant and substantial grant awarded by the German Research Foundation DFG. For the very first time, a Cluster of Excellence has been awarded to the field of Architecture. It will contribute to establishing one of the biggest research centers in the field globally.

The Cluster aims to harness the full potential of digital technologies to rethink design and construction based on integration and interdisciplinarity, with the goal of enabling game-changing innovation in the building sector. The cluster represents the breadth of scientific excellence of the University of Stuttgart and the Max Plank Institute for Intelligent Systems, across the fields of architecture, structural engineering, building physics, engineering geodesy, manufacturing and system engineering, computer science and robotics, social sciences and humanities. It will be led by Prof. Achim Menges from the Institute for Computational Design and Construction.

We are now starting to build our team for the Cluster’s research and invite applications for numerous open PhD and Postdoc positions.   • RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: DOCTORAL LEVEL (E13 TVL)

    You should be qualified to conduct research in the field of computational design and construction.
    We offer you to:

    • Conduct doctoral research in one of the research projects in the Cluster of Excellence (duration approx. 3,5 years) in direct collaboration with our research partners in one of the following areas: integrative computational design, agent-based design modelling, cyber-physical robotic fabrication and construction, distributed construction robotics, innovative building systems based on wood or fibre composite materials, IntCDC-based building typologies and architecture.
    • Contribute to the development of the Cluster’s various building demonstrators.
    • Instruct master theses and teach courses in topics related to your research as part of the international ITECH MSc program.
    • Participate in the development of the Cluster’s new large-scale fabrication laboratory and cyber-physical construction site.

    We expect you to have an advanced architectural, technical or computer science degree, strong programming/scripting skills and/or strong experience with digital fabrication processes. Alternatively, you may have strong design skills and several years of experience in architectural practice.

 

  • RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: POSTDOCTORAL LEVEL (E14 TVL)

    You should be qualified to lead research in the field of computational design and construction.
    We offer you to:

    • Lead research projects and conduct postdoc-level research in the Cluster of Excellence in direct collaboration with our research partners in one of the following areas: integrative computational design, agent-based design modelling, cyber-physical robotic fabrication and construction, distributed construction robotics, innovative building systems based on wood or fibre composite materials. Research project duration is approx. 3,5 years.
    • Contribute to the development of the Cluster’s various building demonstrators.
    • Optionally co-supervise doctoral theses and instruct master theses related to your research as part of the international ITECH MSc program.
    • Participate in the development of the Cluster’s new large-scale fabrication laboratory and cyber-physical construction site.

    We expect you to have a strong doctoral degree and considerable research experience in at least one of the fields mentioned above.

 

The Cluster’s research environment is internationally oriented and all scientific communication will be in English. Thus, excellent English language skills are required for all positions. German language skills are advantageous. We also expect a high level of commitment and dedication, team spirit and interest in interdisciplinary work.

The expected start date for all positions is as soon as possible, the very latest on 1st of July 2019.
