Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation funds collaborative smart wood research
The Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI / KTI) has granted funding for the project: Smart Innovative Manufacturing of Curved Wood Components for Architecture with Complex Geometry. The multi-year R+D project is an integrated effort between the Laboratory for Applied Wood Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Materials Science and Technology (Empa)/ Wood Materials Science, Institute of Building Materials, ETH Zürich, the Institute for Computational Design and Construction, University of Stuttgart and a Swiss industry partner.
The funding is the outcome of an ongoing collaboration between the research groups. At the ICD the project is the newest development from established research in the application of wood as programmable ‘smart’ material for building construction conducted by Prof. Achim Menges, Dylan Wood, and former research associate Steffen Reichert.
